David Bernard is a sought-after and versatile trumpet player, music arranger, contractor, and music entrepreneurship advocate based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is the founder and owner of Bell & Bow Music, LLC, a professional classical and jazz musician contracting business serving Southwest Michigan. He is also the Lead High Brass Instructor at Kalamazoo Kids in Tune, an "El Sistema-inspired" orchestral immersion after-school program presented by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in partnership with Community in Schools  and Kalamazoo Public Schools.
As a trumpeter David has performed nationwide and throughout Europe. He serves as third trumpet of the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, principal trumpet in the Kalamazoo Philharmonia, and has performed with the West Michigan Symphony, Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Holland Symphony Orchestra, Livonia Symphony Orchestra, and the Michigan Philharmonic. He also enjoyed several seasons as a member of the Motor City Brass Band in Metro Detroit and toured with the DCI World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, California.
David has extensive performance experience in Southwest Michigan pit orchestras, having played at Mason Street Warehouse in Saugatuck, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Grand Rapids Circle Theater, Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, Farmer's Alley Theater, the Barn Theater in Augusta, Portage Central and Northern High School Theaters, Western Michigan University Theater, as well as others in the area. This experience has contributed to his fluid versatility.
David continues to gig with local bands and chamber ensembles. He has greatly enjoyed being a member of the Kalamazoo Brass Collective since 2014. He freelances regularly for classical, jazz, rock, commercial, and wedding services in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Holland, and Detroit, and serves as a contractor for various musical needs in those areas. He is a proud member of Bugles Across America and volunteers to perform 'Taps' for veterans being laid to rest.
David received his bachelor's degree in music performance from Western Michigan University. There he performed as a member of the University Symphonic Band, the undergraduate-honors Russell Brown Brass Quintet, and Downbeat Award-winning Jazz Orchestra and Gold Company. He studied with Scott Thornburg, Scott Cowan, Steve Zegree, and Robert White in Kalamazoo, MI, and Charles Larkins in Ann Arbor, MI.
